Tarahn Harris – Human Services Specialist with 25+ Years of Experience
Tarahn Harris is a dedicated social worker with over 25 years of experience serving at-risk and underrepresented populations. Born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, Tarahn’s personal journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of second chances. His unique combination of lived experience and professional expertise makes him a transformative advocate for individuals navigating the criminal justice system.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Virginia State University and a Master in Social Work (MSW) degree from the University of Maryland School of Social Work, where he specialized in Children and Families as well as Management and Community Organizing.
A Story of Redemption and Impactful Leadership
As a youth, Tarahn faced significant challenges, including time in the Massachusetts Department of Youth Services and the Suffolk County House of Corrections due to decisions made during adolescence. These experiences, however, fueled his commitment to turn his life around and help others do the same.
During his incarceration, Tarahn reflected deeply on his life choices and began planning a new path forward. While incarcerated, he applied to colleges and was accepted by several institutions, demonstrating his determination to rebuild his life. Within 30 days of his release, Tarahn relocated to Virginia and began his college career, navigating the challenges of being a convicted felon with grace and perseverance.
During his undergraduate studies, Tarahn interned at the Hopewell Jail in Virginia, where he facilitated rehabilitation programs for inmates. He created a men’s group that provided a safe space for inmates to express their emotions and reflect on their current situations. This experience solidified his commitment to helping incarcerated individuals rehabilitate and reintegrate into society.
Professional Journey
Since earning his MSW, Tarahn has built an impressive career in human services, holding roles such as therapist, case manager, case coordinator, resident services coordinator, and workforce development coordinator for returning citizens. He has also managed homeless shelters and worked with juvenile delinquents, consistently focusing on underserved communities.
Tarahn’s professional and personal experiences have equipped him with a deep understanding of the systemic challenges faced by justice-involved individuals. His ability to connect with clients through empathy and lived experience allows him to develop tailored solutions that address their unique needs.
In 2010, Tarahn successfully petitioned to have his criminal record sealed, removing barriers that once hindered his opportunities. This milestone marked another chapter in his journey, empowering him to further his mission of supporting those seeking rehabilitation and a fresh start.
